North Freedom UMC

Worship 9 am, Coffee and Chat 10 am (1st Sunday of the month).

The North Freedom United Methodist Church began as Calvary United Evangelical Church after obtaining land from Isaac Rittinger and Solomon Yount in 1896.  The church was built on subscriptions of money, labor, and materials totaling $851 in the winter months of December, January, and February by 56 volunteer men.   Isaac Rittinger, one of the first pioneer settlers in the area, donated boards and cash from his sawmill and helped build the church.  Village founder Jonathan Yount also donated money and helped with the construction.  The church was dedicated on February 14, 1897.  The first Sunday School was held on July 11, 1897, with 61 in attendance, and the collection was .28.

The United Evangelical Church merged with the United Brethren in Christ in 1946 to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church of which this church joined.  In 1970, the North Freedom Evangelical United Brethren Church joined Mount Carmel, Mudlic, and New Salem as a four-point charge in the Indiana District.  The Evangelic United Brethren was united with the Methodist Church in 1968 to become the United Methodist Church.  In 2003, the district realigned the churches and North Freedom became a three-point with Ringgold and Langville.  The Langville Church was unable to continue, and in 2020, the North Freedom United Methodist Church was joined by Ringgold and Timblin UMC churches.

Many renovations and improvements have been done over the years, including adding a full basement under the building.  A kitchen and restrooms were also added, as well as new furnaces.  The congregation worships under the leadership of their Pastor, and music is provided each week on the piano and organ; periodically, an elective choir and bell choir offer special music.  A monthly discussion group meets for deeper scriptural study.  The congregation still offers a community Thanksgiving Supper every year and an outreach mission offering medical equipment to those in need.  Their mission is to maintain and offer a place to worship and study the word of God, as well as being committed to showing Jesus' love to the community.
